As our 2024 Convention wraps up in Boston, we are already looking ahead to next year in Denver and how we can Dream Boldly together.

The greatest moments of social change and human innovation are born out of dreams. What are we dreaming about? What are we dreaming for? Whom are we dreaming with? These are the questions we’ll explore as we bring Dream Boldly into focus from ideas into fully formed sessions.

We invite you to submit your ideas, thoughts, and vision on how we can Dream Boldly together. Get inspired by Program Chair Antero Garcia’s theme for the Convention.

The Global Society of Online Literacy Educators (GSOLE) invites proposals for its eighth annual online international conference. This event will be hosted online with the following schedule:

Asynchronous presentations open on Saturday, February 1, 2024
Synchronous presentations begin on Thursday, February 6, and Friday, February 7, 2025.

Online literacy education is an enduring and emerging field of practice and research. Our annual conference creates space for us to take stock of what we know, what we’ve learned, what has changed, and what remains the same. To that end, our conference aligns with GSOLE’s overarching mission and goals:

Promote literacy as the core of teaching and learning, no matter the delivery method-–online, hybrid, or face-to-face
Ensure that online literacy education is accessible and inclusive for all students and educators
Amplify voices of all online educators, regardless of department or disciplinary affiliation, including students and writing center and writing program staff
Foster discussions across cultures, environments, time zones, and disciplines

The growing prevalence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics is changing how we learn and teach literacy. These emerging technologies raise questions about authorship, creativity, and the role of human educators in an AI-enhanced world. Moreover, many of the digital components of the communication technologies that students and instructors use for online literacy courses also shape interaction in social media spaces.

This year’s theme "Humans, Non-Humans, and Humanity" invites participants to explore the evolving dynamics between human beings, non-human entities, and the broader concept of humanity within the context of online literacy education. This theme encompasses a wide range of topics that explore how AI affords users the ability to act on feelings of goodwill--or on their fears, anxieties, and biases.

The Affiliates Committee is now soliciting proposals from current GSOLE members who would like to take part in a GSOLE-sponsored panel at the 2025 International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference in Fort Collins, CO. Find more information about the IWAC Conference Here.

GSOLE's sponsored panel will be guaranteed acceptance to the IWAC 2025 program. To be considered for inclusion on this panel, please complete this form with your contact information and a brief (150-word) description of your proposed contribution to the panel. We also welcome full panel proposals of 500 words, provided that all proposed panelists are GSOLE members.

IWAC submissions will be due in the fall; therefore, we request all GSOLE proposals by August 20th. Chosen participants will be notified before proposal submission to confirm.

GSOLE invites you to volunteer for the Conference Planning Committee. Each year, GSOLE offers a virtual conference in February, and this important virtual gathering is only possible because of generous volunteers. Any active GSOLE member can join the committee. To join, we ask that you complete this brief Conference Committee Member survey, which will help us identify the best way to contact you and learn about your workflow preferences and needs. We realize that our community thrives when we have different perspectives and points of view serving on this committee and hope if you have the interest and bandwidth, you’ll consider joining us!

Conference Committee members will have a voice in shaping and promoting the call for proposals, reviewing presentation proposals, designing the conference experience and preparation materials, and facilitating conference sessions during the conference event. Want to just join us for part of this preparation work? That’s great! We’ll take whatever help you are willing to give whenever you are willing to give it. Call for Proposals—2024 CCCC Fall Virtual Institute: Machine Writing and the Work of Rhetoric and Composition

Institute Date: October 23, 2024

Proposal Deadline: August 9, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. ET

We’re excited to invite group (4–5 speakers) and individual roundtable proposals for the first-ever one-day CCCC Fall Virtual Institute, devoted to critical conversations on wicked problems challenging rhetoric and composition. This year, we seek roundtable discussions that build on current conversations about machine learning and writing.

We imagine this event differently than a virtual conference that replicates in-person CCCC. Rather, the CCCC Fall Virtual Institute is a space for provocative presentations of ideas, focused writing, and small-group interactions. Each roundtable session will work as a foundation of provocation that will inspire attendees to write, compose, reflect, and move new or existing projects forward. By the end of the conference, the results of the conversation will be distributed to CCCC members. We consider this institute an opportunity to learn in the community.

The event will feature eight roundtable sessions on machine writing, two on each of the four larger areas of interest that machine learning challenges: theory, pedagogy, assessment, and administration. The day will include four participant-created roundtables and four chair-created roundtables with no special distinction made between them. Each panel, whether participant-created or chair-created, will have opportunities to collaborate with each other and the co-chairs before the event. Those submitting proposals for individual roles will be placed in a chair-created roundtable.

GSOLE's webinars are designed to spark conversation, provide professional development, share ideas, and build community. Webinar recordings are made available to GSOLE members in an online archive, and webinar leaders are encouraged to transform their webinar topics into ROLE or OLOR Effective Practices publications. Webinars are:

Led by a single presenter or a small group
60–90 minutes long
Combinations of theory and practice with actionable plans for instructors, tutors, and others

We invite the CGC membership to explore “Change, Adaptation, and Engagement in Graduate Communication” at our annual Summer Institute (SI). In keeping with our recent practice of alternating in-person and virtual SIs to serve the access needs and mode preferences of all CGC members, we are excited to meet virtually in 2024, generously hosted by Purdue University.

This theme of “Change, Adaptation, and Engagement” speaks to what is new and what persists in our work with graduate students as emerging professional communicators in their respective fields and career paths. We will explore the various institutional, programmatic, disciplinary, and technological changes we have been navigating in graduate communication and will share our diverse experiences of adapting to emergent trends and technologies and using them within disciplinary conventions and pedagogies. We will also consider the nature and practice of engagement across the various pedagogical, professional, social, political, and technological domains that inform graduate communication.

IWCA Outstanding Article Award

Members of the Writing Center community are invited to nominate articles about writing center theory, practice, research, and history for the IWCA Outstanding Article Award. The IWCA Outstanding Article Award is presented at the IWCA Annual Conference. Please note the policies, criteria, and nominating process below.

Policies

Nominated publications must be dated within the calendar year for which awards are being considered.
Publications may appear in print or digital venues.
The IWCA welcomes submissions from scholars and researchers at all stages of their academic careers, including undergraduate students, graduate students, and adjuncts, but notes that all submissions will be evaluated in the same way and with the same criteria.
Self-nominations are not accepted, and each nominator can submit one nomination only.
Nominees should be IWCA members in good standing. For work with multiple authors, at least one author should be a current IWCA member.
If the nominated individual is not a current member, the Awards Committee will reach out to see if they want to be considered.

Criteria

The article being nominated must have been published during the year preceding the nomination year. For example, articles nominated for the 2024 award must have been published in 2023.
The publication addresses one or more issues of long-term interest to writing center administrators, theorists, and/or practitioners.
The publication discusses theories, practices, or policies that contribute to a richer understanding of writing center theory and practice.
The publication shows sensitivity toward the situated contexts in which writing centers exist and operate.
The publication makes a significant contribution to the scholarship of and research on writing centers.
The publication will serve as a strong representative of the scholarship of and research on writing centers.
The publication embodies the qualities of compelling and meaningful writing.

Nomination Process

All nominations must be submitted through this Google form. Nominations include a letter or statement of no more than 400 words outlining how the work being nominated meets the award criteria below. All articles and chapters will be evaluated using the same criteria. We encourage writing center scholars and practitioners at all levels to nominate works that they have found impactful. Nominations are due by June 1st, 2024. The winner will be announced at the 2024 IWCA Online Conference. Questions about the award or nominating process should be sent to the IWCA Awards Chairs, Chessie Alberti (chessie.alberti@oregonstate.edu) and Kat Bell (kbell6@antioch.edu).

In 2015, Potts, et. al. wrote about the creation of the Experience Architecture program at Michigan State University, where their

goal was to teach how we can become “architects of digital experiences” and “positively influence the ways in which we have

traditionally built products and services by focusing on human experience first instead of technology.” In 2009, Jesse James

Garrett noted that “Experience Design is the design of anything independent or across media with human experience as the

explicit outcome and human engagement as the explicit goal” (qtd. in Cummings, 2009). Garrett constructs a bridge between

experience and engagement for learning experience designers to begin to think beyond just student experience with course

content, but also student engagement. Our workshop will focus on these concepts of being an architect of digital experiences

and constructing bridges that keep content and human experience and engagement as the goal. We will begin with a discussion

of definitions and terminology to orient attendees to the language and systems that exist within Learning Experience Design

(LXD), Experience Architecture (XA), and accessibility. We will explore the breakdown of LXD and User Experience (UX) under the

umbrella of Experience Architecture and how these roles can exist and thrive within academic spaces. The workshop will also

connect LXD to engagement in terms of getting students to engage with course content and learning outcomes.

Participants will

1. Engage in a design challenge either in small groups or as a whole group (depending on the number of attendees)

2. Focus on creating a learning experience that focuses on engagement, accessibility, and takes into consideration the

constraints of designing for a specific situation/course/content/field, and so on

3. Apply the fundamentals of LXD that will be explored at the beginning of the webinar. In doing so, attendees will be

nudged to build systems and spaces that create experiences for their students to engage in course content and learning

About the Program

The Global Society for Online Literacy Educators (GSOLE) is an international organization that connects those who teach writing, reading, and composition as digital literacies in online settings. Dedicated to diversity, inclusivity, and access in literacy-based online education, GSOLE awards grants to members to support research in relevant areas of interest related to its mission.

GSOLE will award one or more grants to support research related to online literacy education. We welcome proposals and research that address GSOLE’s mission in general and that focuses on equity and inclusion in online teaching and learning, including work from writing centers and studios. We are particularly inviting emerging scholars (e.g. graduate students) and scholars from underrepresented groups and institutions to apply.

For those interested, we are offering a mentorship-based feedback model this year where applicants can submit a proposal for early feedback (by April 12, 2024) and resubmit for final consideration (by May 17, 2024).

Proposal Format and Fellowship Requirements

One or more GSOLE research grants will be offered ranging from $500 to $2,000* to either an individual researcher or a group of researchers. The two-page project proposal should indicate:

● The research question and brief background that engages in relevant literature

● A research plan that provides details about the methodology and specific methods that considers impact of work

● A budget for the amount requested with timeline

● The scope of work to be done and plans for dissemination

● Relevance to GSOLE’s mission & connections to GSOLE's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) efforts (See mission statement)

● A brief overview of how the grant will further the applicant’s career, trajectory, etc.

*Funds may be proposed to assist with work-time (child care, course load reduction buyouts, etc.), technology (i.e., data analysis software, research equipment) needs, participant participation or recruitment, or research-related travel (i.e., archival research, interviews, etc).

Awardees are also expected to:

1. After 6-12 months:

a. Present findings/emerging findings/methods/etc. at the GSOLE Annual Conference or through a GSOLE Webinar

b. Attend an optional support meeting with Committee Members where grant recipients can receive advice around methods, analysis, etc,

2. After 1 Year: Provide a 2-page write up about research progress to the GSOLE Executive Board

3. Before 2 Years: Submit an article to ROLE for publication

Application and Evaluation Process

To apply for a research grant, submit the following materials with the subject line “GSOLE Research Grant Application 2024” to research@gsole.org:

Proposals may be made by either individual researchers or a group of researchers. They will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Award Details:

● GSOLE does not pay indirect costs (institutional overhead).

● Researcher or lead researcher will be required to submit a W-9 IRS form to the GSOLE Treasurer prior to receiving funding.

● Researcher or lead researcher is responsible for all tax liabilities on the amount received.

Webinar overview

This webinar will introduce participants to an active-learning strategy called “Branching Scenarios,” which challenge students by offering them various learning paths for composing a project. For instance, students are provided a writing assignment, given two rhetorical situations from which they can choose, and are prompted to choose the branch or path that best fits their learning styles and choice of audience, purpose, and medium for their chosen rhetorical situation. Whereas most instructional design or user-centered scholarship in online writing instruction focuses on instructors controlling the design of a course, Branching Scenarios insist that students become active participants in the design process. To model this approach, we’ll present a course module where students are provided an assignment that offers choices of rhetorical situation, various discussion boards based on their choices, and small-stakes activities based on their chosen medium for communication. We’ll then guide participants in brainstorming what assignment can work best for a scenario in their own courses and in thinking through what choices students can make along the process path of learning and creating the project. Participants will leave with an action plan and one scenario drafted to begin working in their courses.

Participants will

1. Understand the philosophy behind Branching Scenarios as they relate to Online Writing Instruction.

2. Consider how Branching Scenarios align with PARS (Personal, Accessible, Responsive, and Strategic) course design.

3. Discover how Branching Scenarios can be developed with Backwards Course Design to address the Student Learning Outcomes of an online-based writing course through a module designed by the attendees.

4. Learn how to deploy a Branching Scenarios activity in their own course by using basic tools in an LMS and through Storyline, a common software program used to develop Branching Scenarios.

The IWCA Awards Committee is seeking chairs willing to lead the sub-committees that will select this year's Outstanding Article, Outstanding Book, Future Leaders Awards, and Travel Grants, as well as those interested in serving as members of those committees. Committee chairs are tasked with selecting committee members, reviewing nominated texts or Future Leader applications, convening committee discussion to select winners, and presenting those awards at the annual conference this October. Committee members will review nominated texts and participate in the deliberation and selection process. The IWCA Awards Chairs will solicit nominations, provide each committee with copies of nominated texts, and guide each chair through the review and selection process.

Room Technology

Each room is outfitted with either a projector/screen or a large TV for presentations. The projector/TV is connected to an in-room PC that presenters can use to either pull up their materials via the internet or, using a USB drive, they can also plug into the in-room PC. There are presentation clickers in every room. If presenters bring their own personal laptops, they can be connected directly to the TVs/projectors via HDMI. There are a few adaptors for those with Mac devices, but presenters may wish to bring their own Mac adaptor.

For Wi-Fi, presenters and attendees can log on to the Gonzaga Guest Wi-Fi from their personal devices. To access, you just select the network and click that you have read and agree to the terms of service.

Conference Center staff will be in the building throughout the day to assist anyone with getting set up in their room.

Call for Proposals: ROLE

We are pleased to announce a call for proposals for a special issue of Research in Online Literacy Education(ROLE), the peer-reviewed research journal of the Global Society for Online Literacy Education (GSOLE). This issue engages with the work of scholar, teacher, and founding editor of ROLE, Michael Greer, to commemorate his contributions to ROLE, GSOLE, and the field of online writing instruction more broadly.

In his “Editor’s Note” from the March 2018 inaugural issue of ROLE, Greer put forth a number of priorities for the journal, including multimodality, multidisciplinarity, strategic pedagogy, and hybrid practices. Greer noted that the journal would define literacy “broadly, as a convergence of writing, reading, composing, interpreting, and designing texts that are alphabetic, multimodal, oral, visual, and digital.” He emphasized the importance of “bringing voices from reading, writing studies, technical communication, composition, writing centers, writing across the disciplines, digital humanities, cultural studies, and beyond.” He centered teacher-research and reflective practice, reiterating the journal’s commitment to “strategic pedagogy, where theory and practice engage and question one another.” And he invited teacher-scholars to imagine “new, hybrid approaches and practices” that address the unique context of online literacy “with its complex mix of technology, discourse, talk, text, image, and play.”

One of his last publications, Design for Learning: User Experience in Online Teaching and Learning, co-authored with Jenae Cohn (2023), is an accessible guide for designing and teaching online classes. Reviewers note the strength of this work is its usability; situating the approach to online course design in user experience, Cohn and Greer crafted an exceedingly usable guide that offers readers multiple pathways to engage with it depending on their needs and experience.

The editors of the journal invite scholars, teachers, and practitioners working broadly in the field of online literacy education to contribute to this special issue. We invite submissions that engage with or consider in some way one or more of the following questions:

What are current best practices in teaching, composing, designing, and/or interpreting multimodal texts?
What new literacies related to multimodal composing are emerging?
What new technologies or best practices can improve the accessibility of alphabetic, multimodal, oral, visual, and digital texts for both author and audience?
What impact is AI having on online pedagogy, digital literacy, and/or muItimodal composing?
What new opportunities for multidisciplinary research exist in the fields of user experience, online literacy instruction, and instructional design for learning?
What tutor training or writing center practices can provide tutoring support for online literacy learning or multimodal composition?
In what ways do WAC/WID programs engage with multimodal composition and digital literacy?
What opportunities exist for multidisciplinary collaboration in curriculum design to facilitate learning transfer related to digital literacy and multimodal composing?
What strategic pedagogies are needed in the field to advance and improve online literacy education?
What kinds of professional development opportunities can WPAs provide to support teacher-research and reflective practice for faculty engaged in online literacy education?
What “new, hybrid approaches and practices” are needed to address the unique context of online literacy teaching and learning?
What ways have you applied, tested, and/or benefited from the practices and strategies outlined in Design for Learning?

We welcome proposals for full-length research articles (4,000-6,000 words) as well as shorter vignettes and narratives (500-1,500 words) that engage with the impact of Greer’s work on your teaching, tutoring, instructional design, learning, and research. Presenters at GSOLE conferences are especially encouraged to submit a proposal based on your presentation. We also invite submissions that push the boundaries of form to imagine other ways of presenting academic research, embodying the spirit of Greer’s vision for ROLE as “not just another journal, but another kind of journal.”

Reducing Barriers to Learning: Creating Accessible Learning Resources

Abstract

Accessible document design is essential for the removal of barriers to learning. This article explores how the authors retrofitted over 300 learning resource documents and PDFs for accessibility and published them in a new Open Educational Resource (OER) for University Writing at Auburn University. Working collaboratively, the authors learned about accessibility standards and the technical processes of creating accessible documents and PDFs. Using the four principles of document accessibility, including visibility, audibility, mobility, and searchability, the authors describe their retrofitting process and provide readers with considerations for document accessibility. Their article addresses OLI Principle 1: “Online literacy instruction should be universally accessible and inclusive.”

Executive Board At-Large Members:

Congratulations Michelle Stuckey, Mary Lourdes Silva, and Nitya Pandey!

Michelle is Clinical Associate Professor and Writing Program Administrator at Arizona State University, where she directs a large, fully online first-year writing program. At ASU, she mentors faculty and peer tutors in OWI, collaborates with faculty to design curricula and assesses course outcomes, and innovates in the field of OLI to meet the needs of diverse student populations.

Mary Lourdes is an Associate Professor of Writing at Ithaca College specializing in Language, Literacy, and Writing Studies. She has been active in GSOLE, serving on numerous committees, including the Conference Planning Committee. She is also a musician who plays Flamenco guitar and Spanish classical music.

Nitya is a doctoral candidate in the Rhetoric and Composition program at Florida State University and will be joining Ohio University in Fall 2023 as Assistant Professor of Instruction. She studies the care ethics of multimodal pedagogy in asynchronous online courses and is interested in supporting professional development and training programs that can have long-term positive outcomes in virtual pedagogical cultures.

Megan is a PhD candidate at the University of Tennessee whose research helps writing teachers and administrators identify which institutional practices encourage effective, equitable writing assessment. Such environments are achieved through full recognition of human diversity –– racial, gender, sexuality, dis/ability, and more –– and the willingness to commit, every day, to concrete professional actions that further the goal of inclusion and respect for all.

This free Zoom event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16th from 4-5:30pm Eastern/ 3-4:30pm Central/ 2-3:30pm Mountain/ 1-2:30 Pacific.

The workshop, “Joining the Conversation: Learning about WAC,” is intended to help graduate students and professionals from across the disciplines and writing studies learn about WAC and will feature breakout rooms by experts in a number of WAC-related topics. The IWCA is currently seeking nominations for Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, three At-Large Representatives, a Two-Year Institutions Representative, and two Peer Tutor Representatives.

The IWCA Nominations Committee hopes to recruit a slate of candidates from a range of institutions and across a variety of identities to run for this year’s election. The IWCA Board is made richer when it is comprised of writing center professionals who represent the broader international writing center community. We encourage nominations and self-nominations of Black, Asian-American, Latinx, Native American, and Pacific Islander writing center professionals; members of the LGBTQ+ community; individuals with disabilities; our colleagues at international writing centers; and writing center folk at two-year colleges, secondary schools, HBCUs, HSIs, and tribal colleges.

Being elected to the Board of IWCA means having an opportunity to sit at the table when a variety of important decisions are being made that will inform IWCA’s

conference and event planning (annual conference, the Summer Institute, and the Collaborative);

Presentation Title: A User-Centered Approach to Researching Student Needs in Synchronous Online Classes

Speaker: Meghalee Das, Texas Tech University

Presentation Description: This webinar discusses the application of user experience (UX) research methodologies to studying the needs of students in synchronous online classes conducted over video conferencing platforms like Zoom. It particularly focuses on methods like user journey maps, environment analysis, surveys, interviews, and affinity diagramming. The webinar also presents the preliminary results of a survey conducted on international students, where participants shared their experiences in online classes, and the instructor qualities and inclusive classroom practices they valued the most.

Speaker Bio: Meghalee Das is a PhD candidate in Technical Communication and Rhetoric at

Texas Tech University (TTU). She teaches first-year composition and technical writing courses in face-to-face and online formats, and also serves as an instructional development consultant. Her research interests include user experience (UX), cultural inclusivity, online instructional design, and digital rhetoric. She has authored chapters in key edited collections and the custom textbook used by the TTU English Department's technical writing courses, and her articles have appeared in Technical Communication, Programmatic Perspectives, and Intercom. For her dissertation, she studies the UX of international students in online learning environments to develop culturally-inclusive and user-centered pedagogical strategies.

Presentation Title: Always Doing More: Examining Writing Program Administrator approaches to Online Writing Instruction & Professional Development

Speaker: Melvin Beavers

Presentation Description: Within Beavers’ 2018 study of 10 WPAs, the participants indicated when asked to describe their role as WPA, that their role(s) was layered, or not easily pinned down to one thing or another. What emerged, as a result, was a theme that he termed “Administrative Rhetorical Mindfulness”, based in part on the repeated interview phrase, “a desire to do more”. This presentation will present an overview of the mixed method research design followed with a review of the findings, discussion of themes, and a reflection of the choices made to ultimately gain a greater awareness about the professional development landscape for online writing instruction.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Melvin E. Beavers (he, him, his) currently serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion fellow at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. Additionally, he is an Assistant Professor and served as the First-Year Writing Director in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing from 2019-2022. His research interests involve DEI training and facilitating, writing program administration, composition pedagogy, online literacy instruction, rhetorical theory, and popular culture studies. He teaches first-year writing and a variety of upper-level writing courses. His work has been published in Academic Labor: Research and Artistry, the WPA Symposium on Black Lives Matter, and an edited collection entitled, Pedagogical Perspectives on Cognition and Writing. Additionally, Dr. Beavers has recently been awarded an Inclusive Leadership Certificate from Harvard’s Division of Continuing Education.

Dr. Y'Shanda Rivera

Understanding the Times (and knowing what to do): How Culturally ecologically rooted ideologies and practices can promote equity and literacy across K-12 and higher education

Dr. Y’Shanda Rivera earned a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy. Her research centers around improving educational and social outcomes for highly-vulnerable adolescents via cultural ecological frameworks, school community partnerships, critical literacy engagement, identity development, and the design of learning environments.

A state-certified teacher and administrator who has held a number of classroom and administrative positions across K-12 and higher education, Dr. Rivera has over 25 years of combined experience in research, literacy, leadership training, professional development and cultural competency. Her professional and volunteer collaborations extend across a range of organizations including several local schools, universities, and community organizations.

As an educational consultant, Dr. Rivera has given a number of invited keynote addresses, workshops, and media appearances/interviews, some of which include: A Political Ecology of African American English (2021) at the College of the Atlantic, Academic, Cultural, Religious and Political Actions to Promote Anti-Racism (2020) with the Aptly Outspoken Collective,

ESPN’s The Undefeated as a Culture and Language Expert (2019), We Raise Foundation’s Community Conversation From Challenges to Celebrations: How Community Collaborations Serve Youth” (2019), and Code Meshing: Critical Awareness in Action (2018) at Frontier Center for Urban Education at Nazareth College. She has published articles/chapters in: This Ain't Yesterday's Literacy: Culture and Education After George Floyd (2021) and Continuing the Journey 2: Becoming a Better Teacher of Authentic Writing where she penned: Valuing

Students’ Language Repertoires: An Ecological Perspective (2018). In 2014, Dr. Rivera co-authored Other People’s English: Code Meshing, Code Switching and African American Literacy, which is now in its 2 nd edition (2019).

In addition to her role as an educational consultant, Dr. Rivera is the Director of Strategy, Research and Partnerships at R City Community Development Center located in Chicago and an adjunct professor of academic writing in the University of Maryland’s Global Campus (UMGC) Writing Across the Curriculum department.

Mahli Mechenbier, J.D.

"Now What?": Next Steps for Contingent Faculty when Your WPA assigns you an online course

Mahli Mechenbier, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Kent State University: Geauga, teaches Technical Writing, Professional Writing, Argumentative Prose Writing, Introduction to LGBT Literature, and College Writing. Mahli is a certified Master Reviewer and a certified Face-to-Face Facilitator for Quality Matters.

Prof. Mechenbier graduated with a Master of Arts in English Literature from John Carroll University and a Juris Doctor from The University of Akron. She was a member of NCTE's Committee for Effective Practices for Online Writing Instruction and was an editor for the OWI’s Open Resource from 2013 – 2016. Mahli was the recipient of the College of Arts & Sciences 43rd annual Distinguished Teacher Award in 2012.

Her research interests include asynchronous online tone and communication methods; how academic administrations manage and budget distance learning; the unionization of professors; and the employment conditions and intellectual property rights of contingent faculty members.

Prof. Mechenbier has been teaching at Kent State University since 2003.

Mahli was adopted from South Vietnam through Operation Babylift after an American missionary nun found her next to a road outside of Saigon. She has two cats: Freyja and Hyperion.

Digital Platforms Manager

GSOLE is seeking a current member to serve as our Digital Platforms Manager. This is a two-year appointment that can be renewed with approval of the Executive Board. Some experience in setting up accounts services and modifying web pages is expected, but not necessarily in the context of an organization. The position entails about 10 hours of monthly volunteer time:

Monitor the <info@gsole.org> email account.
Lead one or more online committee meetings each month.
Manage and maintain organizational accounts on all our digital platforms (especially Wild Apricot, Google Suites, Zoom, and various social media platforms), including setting up access for other volunteers and members.
Coordinate technical support for organizational activities taking place on GSOLE’s digital platforms, including preparing or setting up digital platforms for use by GSOLE programs (e.g., conferences, webinars, etc.) and responding to requests for assistance in accessing, using, and participating in GSOLE’s events, resources, and programs.
Work with the Digital GSOLE Committee and Lead Content Curator to establish policies and procedures for using and maintaining GSOLE’s operational data (e.g., member records, invoices, etc.), public and administrative web pages, and digital assets (e.g., archives, articles, etc.).
Help update and develop the organization’s website by collaborating with the Lead Content Curator, Membership Officer, Communication Officer, and assistant Content Curators, and other officers or committee chairs.
Research and recommend the acquisition of new digital technologies to further GSOLE’s overall mission of inclusive online literacy education.

GSOLE is seeking Reader/Reviewers for all two of its publications: Research in Online Literacy Education (ROLE), and OLOR Reviews. Duties for this role include an estimated 20 hours of service per year:

The AWAC Mentoring Committee is excited to announce our first fall virtual workshop, “Turning the Page: Notes Towards Mindfulness, Motivation, and Meaningful Work at HBCU Writing Centers and Programs,” Friday, September 30th at 12 p.m. U.S. Eastern/11 a.m. U.S. Central/ 10 a.m. U.S. Mountain/ 9 a.m. U.S. Pacific, presented by Dr. Kendra Mitchell, Dr. Robert Randolph, Jr., and Amber Lunderman. As part of our affiliation with GSOLE, AWAC welcomes GSOLE members to join us for one of our virtual workshops each year.

Workshop Overview

Drawing upon their award-winning 2018 International Writing Center Association keynote address, the presenters will discuss the strategies and techniques they employ in their writing programs to promote mindfulness, motivation, and meaningful work at HBCUs. They are exploring this meaningful work of mindful motivation in the HBCU writing centers as makerspaces. First, they will talk about practical mindfulness techniques that help to decrease anxiety, track intentionality, and promote reflection. Then, they will discuss the intersections of African American Language (AAL) and Edited American English (EAE) to provide students with a sense of agency and motivation. Lastly, they will speak about how writing ecologies, including writing centers, help promote a sense of meaningful work that extends beyond writing assignments.

Speaker Bios

Kendra Mitchell (she/her), is Director of Composition at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, where she has taught composition, literature, and historical linguistics. She serves as an Executive Committee member for NCTE and was also appointed to the NCTE Committee for Change, a social justice-driven committee. Her research interests include the intersections of translanguaging, writing center studies, and Black ways of knowing. Dr. Mitchell’s writing center scholarship can be found in the Writing Center Journal, Praxis Journal, and several book collections. Her current scholarship includes mapping geospatial, social, and multimodal circulation of Black identities and culture at/as HBCUs found in her forthcoming co-edited special issue in the Journal of Multimodal Rhetorics, Transdisciplinarity @HBCUs: (Re)Writing Black Futures beyond the Margins, and her forthcoming HBCU writing center co-edited collection, Makin’ A Way Outta No Way: HBCUs, Writing Centers, & Antiracism.

Robert Randolph, Jr., PhD (he/him), is Director of The Writing Center at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. His research and teaching interests include 20th- and 21st-century African American literature and cultural production, socio-cultural foundations of education, and Black feminist and queer rhetorics and pedagogies. His notable publications include “The Queer Poetics of Social Justice: Literacy, Affect(ion), and the Critical Pedagogical Imperative” and “Shifting the Talk: Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Feminism at HBCUs.”

Amber Lunderman (she/hers) is a Fall 2021 graduate of Florida A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in English. She currently works as a tutor in the FAMU Writing Resource Center and as a Marketing Assistant for Anhinga Press in Tallahassee. During her senior year, Amber was a student editor for FAMU’s literary Journal, CaKe, an experience which inspired her to want to pursue a post-graduate degree in Publishing. She will be attending Rosemont College in spring of 2023 where she will be on a quest to obtain a double degree in Publishing and Creative Writing. Amber is a lover of fantasy, sci-fi, magical realism, and historical fiction.

New Publication from Troy Hicks and Kristen Hawley Turner

In this brand new English Journal article (September 2022), Troy Hicks and Kristen Hawley Turner challenge us to actually integrate digital literacy strategies into our online teaching. They point out that simply making digital tools available to learners does not change how they participate in learning. They advocate that we “move beyond translating comfortable pedagogies into online spaces and, instead, focus on developing authentic literacy practices” (p. 86). A great feature of this article is Troy’s and Kristen’s retrospective on previous articles they and others have done on digital literacies. The article includes tangible, detailed examples of how to support learners’ digital literacies in the online settings that have become so familiar to us all.

The Global Society of Online Literacy Educators is excited to announce its 2022-2023 professional development offerings! We believe online instructors need time, support, and guidance to teach effectively and confidently in online spaces.

These month-long asynchronous courses are designed and facilitated by online literacy scholars for online writing educators in secondary writing courses, first-year writing programs, technical writing courses, writing-intensive disciplinary courses, or reading/writing tutoring centers or studios. Each course includes the discussion of OLI theory and scholarship and the development of an OLI artifact that shows your ability to apply the theory in local practice.

The Global Society of Online Literacy Educators, an organization dedicated to supporting hybrid and online teacher-scholars and tutors, invites you to submit proposals for our upcoming Webinar Series:

Globalising literacies:
Fostering engagement and innovation in HyFlex instruction.

GSOLE's webinars are designed to spark conversation, provide professional development, share ideas, and build community. Webinar recordings are made available to GSOLE members in an online archive, and webinar leaders are encouraged to transform their webinar topics into ROLE or OLOR publications. We welcome proposals that include a single webinar leader or a group of 2-3 leaders.

As students and staff start trickling back to campus, instructors need to consider how to adapt pedagogy to the “new normal.” Students have had a taste of remote and flexible learning, and universities worldwide are adapting to the potential of a global student market. For those students for whom time demands and travel are difficult (if not impossible), online learning will likely become an important way to access higher education.

Universities are increasingly calling for instructors to engage in hybrid flexible – “HyFlex” – learning, providing synchronous teaching to students who attend both in person and online. While this is an important step to improving students’ ability to attend classes, it requires instructors to understand, plan, and leverage multiple communication points and technological tools. It carries a number of implications for equity, both in terms of students’ access to technological resources and impacts on instructors’ planning time. While we have always invited individuals to discuss hybrid instruction, this year, we would like to focus exclusively on scholarship around practical solutions for HyFlex instruction.

These hour-long webinars are designed to bring literacy educators together for conversations about a range of issues, including, but not limited to:

Globalization of the face-to-face learning space through technology
Innovative use(s) of technology in HyFlex teaching
Issues related to equity and access where significant technological variability may exist
Transcending barriers between online and face-to-face students in a globalised, synchronous hybrid environment
Strengths-based teaching – leveraging the affordances of diversity in a synchronous hybrid environment
Writing center pedagogies and HyFlex instruction – globalising writing workshops, discussion groups, and writing consultations
Humanizing the digital environment
“Practical” HyFlex – approaches for streamlining planning and instruction and engaging all students
Hybrid course design that emphasises support for diverse student cohorts (e.g., HyFlex teaching at the intersection of disability studies or linguistic diversity)
Inclusive and equity-based methods & methodologies for research on HyFlex instruction

The 2022–2023 series will include four webinars, tentatively scheduled for November, February, and March, and May. In your proposal, please include the following:

Webinar Title
Webinar Leader(s) name, institutional affiliation, contact information, and a brief bio
The preferred month(s) in which you would like to hold your webinar (e.g. offer a ranked list or indicate if one month(s) is not possible)
A 500-word description that includes:

What topics the webinar will cover
Ways in which the webinar will be interactive
How this webinar will benefit online literacy educators

Upon acceptance, you will work with the co-chairs to schedule your webinar. You will meet (virtually) with the co-chairs one month in advance of your webinar, and then again a few days prior to the webinar, to coordinate logistics. The co-chairs will provide technical support and are happy to help you prepare for the webinar. Presenters are also encouraged to to transform webinars into publications for GSOLE’s OLOR or ROLE.

Annual Member Survey—Open until 20 September, 2021

It's time to start working on next year's conference. As you might imagine, a lot of work goes into planning and implementing the conference. We've been fortunate the last few years to have a large committee to minimize extended labor for any one person.

GSOLE Offers Basic OLI Certification for 2021-2022 Academic Year

While COVID has made us all online instructors, it has not given us the time, support, or guidance necessary to teach effectively and confidently in online spaces. The Global Society of Online Literacy Educators (GSOLE), a community of experts in online literacy practices, is offering a Basic Online Literacy Instruction (OLI) Certificate to help teachers and tutors new to online learning implement research-based practices in online courses and online writing centers and make connections with other online literacy instructors.

The course balances theory and practice and is designed to support the instructional work of anyone teaching reading and writing, such as instructors teaching composition, professional writing, literature, creative writing, writing-intensive courses in majors across the disciplines, as well as writing center tutors and English teachers in middle and high schools. The rigor and labor associated with this course can be compared to a graduate-level course with an ePortfolio being the final deliverable that will be assessed for certification. We estimate participants will spend approximately five hours per monthly module over 9 months.

Individuals who enroll in the Basic OLI Certificate will…

Connect with a community of online literacy instructors and tutors as well as online literacy mentors
Learn principles in effective online literacy education
Read scholarship in online literacy instruction (OLI)
Receive guidance from OLI experts on assignment and activity design for online literacy courses and online writing center consultations
Develop strategies for adapting instruction to different online modalities (e.g., synchronous and asynchronous learning)
Develop strategies for assessing online learning
Be able to communicate their approach to OLI to others through the creation of an OLI theory and ePortfolio

We ask that administrators, teachers, or tutors new to online learning consider enrolling for our Basic OLI Certificate, which occurs throughout the 2021–2022 academic year and begins August 15th. To enroll, please visit https://gsole.org/certification.

Registration cost:

For contingent faculty and graduate students: $100
Full-time faculty/staff making under $50,000 annually: $125
Full-time faculty/staff making over $50,000 and up to $75,000 annually: $150
Full-time faculty/staff making over $75,000 annually: $200

Enrollment for this certification is used to fund an honorarium to the OLI facilitator-mentors. Participants must be GSOLE members if they are not so already.

If we can help you advocate to institutional stakeholders for funds related to course registration, please let us know. We encourage institutions who are enrolling multiple participants to contact us as they register these individuals so that we can group them in the same learning pod. In our experience, these institutional cohorts have greater chances for completion and success.

Full OLOR Collection Back Online

The entire Online Literacies Open Resource is back online after migration from our old site to our new one <gsole.org/olor>. In the process, we’ve reconceptualized GSOLE’s publication model, even as we’ve updated (and continue updating) the resources themselves to be more citable, reliable, and accessible.

New OLOR Publication Model

Here are the important details about the updated OLOR publication paradigm:

The Online Literacies Open Resource will now include all of GSOLE’s open resources, including the previously published OLOR resources (now listed as OLOR Effective Practices), Research in Online Literacy Education (ROLE), our Just-in-Time resources, and our OLI Principles. Each of these titles will now be treated as a series underneath our “umbrella” OLOR publication.
We will divide the past ROLE publications into two series: ROLE research and OLOR Reviews. Some of the ROLE technology reviews will be republished under OLOR Effective Practices, depending on the focus of the article.
Each republished piece will acknowledge its original site of publications to ensure past citations of the resources will clearly indicate a reference to the republished pieces.

Improvements to the Resources Themselves

Here are the key features we’re gradually introducing to all the resource pages and articles:

Better web indexing and reliable permalinks for each resource.
Clearer presentation of bibliographic information to facilitate referencing of materials in OLOR.
Section and paragraph numbers to facilitate targeted citation.
Better support for assistive devices through more consistent and more purposeful tagging of material and use of ARIA attributes. We’re working towards WCAG 2.0 compliance.

Call for Volunteers: Help Build OLOR!

Finally, we are also seeking volunteers to help implement the improvements described above.

Copyeditors for GSOLE Publications: Do you have a sharp eye for mechanics, format, and phrasing? If so, we’d value your contributions as a copyeditor.

OLOR Reviews editor: The OLOR Reviews editor will be responsible for soliciting and develop short reviews for books, technology, and other relevant media. This is a great opportunity to network with other OLI professionals and keep apprised of OLI resources.

Lead Curator/Editor of GSOLE’s “Online . . . Just-in-Time” Resources: We developed our Just-in-Time resources in a rush, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, we’d like to curate the resources more deliberately. If you’ve benefited from these resources or have some ideas about how to improve them, consider applying for this Lead Curator/Editor position.

Content Curators for GSOLE Publications: If you’d like to learn more about accessible multimodal composition, this is a great opportunity to practice hands-on techniques making online resources work well for broad audiences of readers. No experience in website development is required. If you’re already adept with accessible multimodal composition, then you’ll have an opportunity to put your knowledge and talents to good use by helping to guide these efforts in short and long term projects.

The Board has moved forward with a new tiered pricing model for institutional memberships that are based on the size of the membership. Institutions can choose from the following tiers:

$300 for up to 15 members
$500 for up to 30 members
$700 for up to 50 members.

Lou Maraj, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh who specializes in anti-racist digital rhetorics and is an award-winning poet. He also co-founded the Digital Black Lit & Composition (DBLAC) national graduate student organization.

Scott Warnock, Ph.D. is a Professor of English and Director of the University Writing Program at Drexel University. He specializes in the use of technology in online writing instruction and is the immediate Past President of GSOLE.

Dear GSOLE colleagues,

My time as GSOLE President is in the past. My two-year term ended June 30. I took a vacation. I then took a few weeks to work on some big projects. But I wanted to send you a brief note of thanks and to say how proud I am of what the people of GSOLE have accomplished since 2016, when a group of us led by Beth Hewett hatched an idea for a professional organization that became GSOLE.

The GSOLE website shows what we are and what we have accomplished. On this (just recently improved!) site, a visitor sees our many OLI resources, such as our two journals, webinar series, research support, conference, certification courses, affiliates, and of course principles and tenets.

It may be less apparent to see who we are. Behind that site and those resources are volunteers who say “yes” over and over again to project and task requests, who carve out time to attend monthly executive board meetings, and who help those in our field. I think the extraordinary spring Just-In-Time response to the international COVID crisis demonstrated well who we are. People inundated with work on their local campuses, who were being called on during long weeks as resident/local online learning experts, somehow found time to create resources and provide support to colleagues for the good of the overall education mission. That is who the people of GSOLE are.

Challenges lie ahead. We will refine and develop our resources. We must continue to grow our membership, a task that will take ongoing, steady work. Part of this membership goal is the specific aim to diversify the organization. People across the United States are seeing our culture, again, at a crossroads in terms of race, and, like many of those people, I am hopeful that this time we may finally, collectively get it right: Black Lives Matter. I believe our organization has articulated concrete ways that we will contribute to that collective choice for good, and the organization is in great hands to meet these challenges with the core leadership of Dan Seward as President, Cat Mahaffey as Vice President, Tess Evans as Treasurer, and Jennifer Burke Reifman as Secretary.

It has been an honor and pleasure to work with all of you as President. I want to thank you for taking my many calls and answering my emails. You have worked so hard for the good of the organization and the good of online learning—which means, ultimately, you are working for students.

While I suppose part of me wishes that my role as Immediate Past President entailed merely wearing a sash and showing up to cut virtual ribbons, I know that is not the nature of GSOLE. I will continue to work hard for the good of the organization. After all, I’ll be in good company.

GSOLE Announces 2020-21 Programs

GSOLE has been busy—busy listening to the needs of an increasingly engaged citizenry, hungry for the tools to make our society more equitable and accessible. In response to this call to action, we’ve added professional events that invite myriad voices to explore the connections between these important conversations, broadly, and online literacy education, specifically.

To that end, we have three programs that cull together the questions educators are asking right now, expert opinions, and the voices of interested educators: our 4^th annual virtual conference, our 2020-21 webinar series, and our new certification program. Keep reading (below) for details.

GSOLE's Annual Conference (2021)

GSOLE’s 4th annual conference is scheduled for Friday, January 29^th, 2021. This conference is—and always has been—hosted virtually, so that educators across the world can gather to explore practical online classroom activities, to hear about the new research in online education, and to attend presentations that link theory to praxis.

For those who want to add to the conversation, GSOLE invites individual paper proposals, praxis posters, site share panels, and Ignite Talks (either individual or panel). No matter the preferred format of delivery, we seek proposals that address the broad aspects of GSOLE’s mission:

Global Society	Honoring our collective international and intercultural experience and knowledge of online literacy practices, facilitating the crossing of physical boundaries and connecting at great distances.
of Online	Addressing the varied, and often new, learning experiences, and ever-morphing and ever-growing learning spaces, from both experienced and new online literacy educators.
Literacy	Exploring the many approaches to literacy education that are developed within local contexts and/or across disciplines, helping us identify approaches to literacy that advance more sustainable, equitable, and effective environments for supporting each other and our students.
Educators	Recognizing ways that writing and reading instructors, tutors, and administrators experience a wide range of constraints and support for teaching so that we might critically examine the institutional, professional, and technological frameworks shaping the work of online literacy educators.

Proposals are due October 5^th, 2020.

GSOLE's 2020-21 Webinar Series

However, there is no need to wait for the annual GSOLE conference to start engaging with the big questions related to the role online literacy education plays in reinforcing “the cultural and communal values of linguistic and social diversity.” GSOLE’s 2020-21 webinar series comprises events focused on: antiracist writing center practice (with Zandra Jordan on August 31^st) in addition to antiracist and translingual pedagogies (with Cristina Sanchez Martin on October 9^th), practices honoring intersectionality in FYC (with Iris Ruiz on November 2^nd), incorporating Black language in Composition classrooms (with Wonderful Faison on February 23^rd), and sustaining cultural sovereignty through critical literacies practices in online learning spaces (with Les Hutchinson on April 14^th).

GSOLE's New OLI Certification Program

For educators who see the possibilities of online literacy instruction, but are eager for more support in designing that learning, GSOLE offers a new certification program. This program is composed of two back-to-back courses: (1) Foundations of Online Literacy Education & Digital Pedagogies (to explore the principles of OLI and the contexts affecting writing pedagogies) & (2) Online Literacy Pedagogies (to practice designing assignments, activities, and assessments).

By the end of this two-course certification program, educators walk away with a professional ePortfolio that includes a comprehensive plan specific to your own institutional context, justification for that plan with the latest research, and a sense of confidence that you can make the online learning environment a rich space for quality writing instruction.

GSOLE Has a New Website!

GSOLE has moved to <gsole.org>!

Besides better accommodating our growing variety of OLI resources, this new website provides fuller member services, including the option for members to display a customizable GSOLE profile page and manage e-mailings. These services are provided through the Wild Apricot <wildapricot.com> member management system—which will mostly remain in the background, although you will see the name every once in a while.

Activating Your Membership on the New Site

To fully take advantage of the new member services, as well as legacy benefits, like free webinar attendance, access to conference and webinar archives, and research support, you’ll need to update your account information. Here’s how to access the benefits of membership:

Active members: You’ll use the same e-mail you used with our old site to log into the new site, but you’ll need to update your password. The new site does allow for single-sign-on (SSO) validation through Google and Facebook logins (if one was used for your GSOLE username), in which case you won’t need to change your password.
Lapsed members: You’ll follow the same process as active members, but after you login, you’ll see a message encouraging you to renew your membership. We’ve lowered our rates while increasing our services, so we hope you’ll find it valuable to renew.
Prospective members: We’d love to have you! If you know already you want to join, please go directly to the “Join Us” page. If you need more convincing, please take a look at our excellent program offerings for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The July Executive Board meeting was busy and productive. Here are some important outcomes:

New Website Address Approved

When GSOLE was first founded in 2016, the most logical domain name, <gsole.org>, was not available. Now it is! The board approved the acquisition of this domain, which will house a refurbished website including fuller member services. The migration will take place early in August 2020.

New Individual Membership Rates Approved

The board approved a new fee schedule for annual individual memberships, which includes reduced rates. Here’s I the new fee schedule:

Student/Contingent Members: $20
Regular Members (pre-tenure or full-time non-tenured faculty and administrators): $30
Sustaining Members (tenured faculty and executive-level administrators: $50

Jude Miller to serve as New Member and Communication Officer

Jude Miller was approved to replace Kim Fahle-Peck as Membership and Communication Officer. We want to welcome Jude, who has also been added to the OLOR editorial board. We also want to express our appreciate to Kim for her excellent service to GSOLE over the past two year. Thanks Kim!

2020-21 Webinar Series Approved

In response to this summer’s vocal demonstrations about the need to address racial inequities head-on, Webinar Co-chairs Jenae Cohn and Mary Stewart have put together an excellent program on antiracist online pedagogies. Certification Program Offering a Two-Course Basic OLI Certificate.

Following a successful pilot program this summer, Certification Co-Chairs Kevin Depew and Amy Cicchino proposed a two-course Basic OLI Certificate curriculum for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. The board approved the appointment of instructors for the program. For more information, visit the GSOLE Certification hub.

June GSOLE Updates

Some important outcomes of the June Executive Board meeting:

New Executive Board Members Welcomed

In July, Meghan Velez and Pavel Zemliansky will join the Executive Board as At-large members, starting two-year terms. In addition, Jennifer Burke Reifman will join the Executive Committee as Secretary. Along with these new members joining the Board, the following Board members will shift positions, starting new two-year terms at the beginning of July:

• Scott Warnock will move from President to Immediate Past President.

• Dan Seward will move from Vice President to President.

• Cat Mahaffey will move from Treasurer to Vice President.

• Tess Evans will move from Secretary to Treasurer.

Finally, founding President Beth Hewett will exit the role of Immediate Past President, while remaining engaged in GSOLE as a member of the Research Support Committee. The entire Board would like to thank Beth for efforts in launching GSOLE and for her early leadership of the organization. Thanks Beth!

GSOLE Statement on Antiracist OLI Approved

To reaffirm GSOLE’s commitment to access and inclusion in online education, the Executive Board approved a Statement on Antiracist OLI Pedagogy and Administration. Discussions are already underway for how GSOLE can support this important movement with real action, in particular, to diversify the organizational leadership and representation in GSOLE programs and membership. Toward that end, Webinar Committee Chairs Jenae Cohn and Mary Stewart proposed inviting scholars of antiracist pedagogies to lead GSOLE’s 2020-21 webinar series, as opposed to making an open call. Given the demands on these important scholars at this crucial moment, the Board approved offering honoraria for invited webinar leaders.

Certification Program Pilot Underway

At the end of May, the Certification Committee announced they would begin a free pilot program for a handful of GSOLE members. The pilot includes 10 students and will provide a useful test run of the certification’s course-contract and ePortofolio methodologies before the program starts in earnest this Autumn. Some key questions remain for discussion at the next Board meeting, including the cost of the program and how certification program instructors will be appointed and supported.

Jude Miller and Jen Cunningham Approved for the OLOR Editorial Board

Jason Snart, editor for the Online Literacies Open Resource (OLOR), proposed Jude Miller and Jun Cunningham for the OLOR editorial board. The Executive Board unanimously approved the appointments.
