Sponsored by the Global Society for Online Literacy Education (GSOLE) and the International Rhetoric Workshop (IRW), this roundtable event will feature four speakers who have expertise in rhetorics and online learning and experience teaching rhetorics and rhetorical theory courses online:

Dr. Foteini Egglezou, founding President of the Hellenic Institute of Rhetorical and Communication Studies and Professor of Critical Pedagogy at the Hellenic Open University in Greece, teaches in the online Master's program. Her research is focused on the implementation of Rhetoric and Argumentation to all educational stages, the educational use of debate, the relation of Rhetoric to Critical Pedagogy, Critical and Active Citizenry, and in the uses of argument in political speech. She will discuss her work with "Odyssey," an online debate program for high schoolers.

Dr. Rich Rice is Professor of English in the Technical Communication and Rhetoric program at Texas Tech University. He teaches and researches composition, rhetoric, and technical communication courses online, including courses on topics like the history of rhetoric, grant writing, online writing instruction, intercultural communication, contemporary composition and rhetoric, and new media. He has also published on topics related to online pedagogy, rhetorical pedagogy, global communication, and ePortfolios

Dr. Erin Wais-Hennen is adjunct professor at Grand Canyon University where she teaches Tech Writing and Rhetorical Theory. She was formerly Asst. Professor of English at Lindsey Wilson College where she taught Modern Rhetoric, and Writing & Culture, among other courses. Dr. Wais-Hennen came to online instruction after a neurological disability caused her to lose her ability to speak and offers instructors with speech disabilities an approach to discussing disability with students and alternatives for online instruction outside of speaking or being on camera.

Brendan Hawkins is a PhD Candidate at Florida State University where he teaches classes in Rhetoric and College Composition in addition to supporting GTAs as the Online Writing Coordinator for College Composition. In his approach to teaching rhetoric online, Hawkins bases his courses around key terms, which allow students to grapple with broader questions about rhetoric while encouraging them to read across texts and time periods.

Attendees will have an opportunity to:

  • connect to other online instructors and rhetoric instructors,
  • learn strategies for designing engaging online content for rhetorics and rhetorical theory courses,
  • learn of activities that help online students grapple with theoretical content
  • engage in a thoughtful discussion on online rhetorical pedagogies
The event will take place on Thursday, August 20th at 8am US PST, 10am US CST, 11am US EST, 12pm UTC/GMT, 6pm EE ST/AST and will be held over Zoom.
